Why TikTok’s unpredictability is its most attractive feature
By
Tilly Brogan
January 25, 2024
It’s 22:41 on a Tuesday evening. I’m lying in bed trying not to think about how if the West are now living in a “post-pandemic” state, yet the virus is only accelerating in the East, does that now make Covid-19 a third world disease, and whether or not if J-Lo and Ben Affleck getting back together means I should dig out my old Tamagotchi from under my bed in some sort of Noughties’ tribute. The only thing distracting me from these thoughts? TikTok.

Why brands “rainbow-washing” for Pride month is even more harmful after a year in the pandemic
By
Tilly Brogan
January 25, 2024
Every year on May 31st, I stay up until midnight to watch businesses around the world suddenly update their logo to one with a rainbow on it; at the end of the month, I also watch as these corporations wait no longer than 00:01 on the 1st of July to return to their usual trademark symbol. More often than not, this marketing revamp is an example of rainbow-washing.

Pride and Profit: how can brands do right by Pride Month?
By
Rhiannon Shaw
January 25, 2024
As we reach the end of another Pride Month, we find ourselves looking back at how brands sought to demonstrate their commitment to the LGBTQ+ community in perfunctory ways; they installed rainbow routes on the Uber app, Skittles yet again got rid of their rainbow, and dozens of companies swapped out their sleek black-and-white logos for gaudy Pride editions (well, in countries where they’ve calculated that the risk is worth the reward – see Bethesda and Mercedez-Benz)

DeadHappy: putting life into life insurance
By
Leah Montebello
January 25, 2024
As the only thing in life that’s inevitable, we are all undoubtedly terrified of death – let alone the idea of planning for it. From the paperwork, to solicitors’ fees, the notion of getting life insurance in your twenties feels as appealing as pulling out all your front teeth and wearing them as a necklace. However, Phil Zeidler and Andy Knott, have come up with a solution that not only appeals to the tech-savvy millennial but also reframes death in a more personal and hopeful light.

Why tweeting about Love Island has become better than actually watching it
By
Tilly Brogan
January 25, 2024
It’s been just over a week since Love Island returned to our screens. After last year’s season was cancelled because of the pandemic, the whole nation was excited to hear the cries of “I’VE GOT A TEXT!” and the endless possibilities of “Can I pull you for a chat?” once more. However, despite being gone for a whole year, the comeback season of the hit ITV2 series has only just started to pick up pace.

Zillenial Tech: Technology at the intersection of Gen Z and the Millennial generation
By
Tilly Brogan
January 25, 2024
Zillennial: someone usually born between 1993 and 1998 who considers themselves too old for Gen Z, but too young for the Millennial generation. Zillennials make up a micro-generation of people currently in their mid-to-late twenties who don’t feel like they fit into either generational stereotype; we don’t know what it’s like to go to university and pay less than £9k, but our wardrobes are still filled with more skinny jeans than flares.

Are Barilla’s Playlist Timers on Spotify the most innovative thing a CPG brand has done this year?
By
Tanisha Fletcher
January 25, 2024
With the rise of webinars and white papers on how to market to Gen Z or optimise TikTok ads, the pursuit of new marketing channels by big brands is seemingly relentless. As generations diverge significantly in the channels they use day to day, brands can be forgiven for trying new mediums to stay relevant.

By
Tilly Brogan

But this time, I’m talking about the millions of TikTok users poking fun at the fact they’re in debt to Klarna.
